LUSH

Putting environmental policy at the forefront of retail

LUSH is a well-known example in the business world for its environmental policies and commitment to sustainability, making it an ideal case study for companies aiming to start more green and ethical operations. Known for its handmade, ethically sourced cosmetics, LUSH has embedded sustainability into every layer of its business—from using 100% recycled packaging and offering package-free products, to powering its manufacturing sites with renewable energy and actively reducing carbon emissions across its supply chain. The company also champions environmental activism, supporting conservation efforts and grassroots campaigns. LUSH’s transparent sourcing, rigorous self-imposed standards, and commitment to regenerative practices demonstrate how businesses can successfully integrate green principles while remaining commercially successful.

Commitment to Climate and Nature

Our ambition is to leave the world Lusher than we found it encompassing the living Earth, People, and Animals. For each of these, we have created an action-packed and bold pathway of how we can make a meaningful contribution.

Lush demonstrates a holistic approach to environmental stewardship by integrating sustainability into every facet of its operations. From product design to energy consumption, the company prioritises eco-friendly practices. For instance, Lush has committed to using 100% renewable energy across its stores, offices, and manufacturing sites, aiming to eliminate fossil fuel use from direct operations by 2030.

Moreover, Lush’s innovative product designs, such as solid shampoo bars, reduce the need for packaging, thereby minimising waste. Approximately half of Lush’s products are “naked,” meaning they require no packaging at all.

For products with packaging, a recycling scheme is available at all stores – each item giving the customer 50p towards their next purchase (see “Bring It Back” scheme below).

Lush places significant emphasis on sourcing raw materials responsibly. The company actively avoids ingredients that are environmentally harmful, such as palm oil, and seeks alternatives that are more sustainable. Over 70% of Lush’s product range is self-preserving, reducing the need for synthetic preservatives.

Additionally, Lush collaborates with suppliers who respect the environment and the communities they operate in. By investing in regenerative agriculture and supporting community-led projects, Lush ensures that its supply chain contributes positively to both people and the planet.

Lush’s commitment to reducing packaging waste is evident in its product offerings and recycling initiatives. The company uses recycled materials for 90% of its packaging by weight and aims to make all packaging recyclable or compostable.

To encourage recycling, Lush operates the “Bring It Back” scheme, where customers can return used packaging in exchange for incentives like discounts or free products. This initiative not only reduces waste but also fosters customer engagement in sustainability efforts.

Beyond operational changes, Lush actively supports environmental and social causes. The company uses its platform to raise awareness about climate justice, biodiversity loss, and the importance of protecting natural habitats. By funding projects that protect forests, wetlands, and other critical ecosystems, Lush contributes to global conservation efforts.

Furthermore, Lush’s advocacy extends to supporting communities affected by environmental degradation, ensuring that its sustainability initiatives are inclusive and equitable.

Lush recognises that sustainability is an ongoing journey. The company regularly reviews and updates its environmental policies to reflect new insights and technologies. By maintaining transparency about its goals and progress, Lush holds itself accountable and invites stakeholders to participate in its sustainability mission.

This culture of continuous improvement ensures that Lush remains at the forefront of environmental responsibility, setting a benchmark for other businesses to follow.
