If you are the ‘responsible person’ of a commercial premises, you are required under fire safety law to ensure your premises has adequate fire safety arrangements in place to keep people safe from fire. Below are helpful tips and tricks for you and your business.

Every business must have an up-to-date Fire Risk Assessment completed by a competent person.
Fire Risk Assessments should usually be reviewed every 12 months, or sooner if there are changes to the building, layout, occupancy, or how the premises is used.
A Fire Risk Assessment helps to:
- Identify fire hazards and how a fire could start or spread
- Identify people who may be at risk
- Reduce or remove fire risks where possible
- Review evacuation procedures and staff training needs
All staff should know what to do if a fire occurs.
This includes:
- Knowing who is responsible for calling 999
- Understanding the building evacuation plan
- Knowing the location of fire assembly points
- Understanding whether they are expected to use fire extinguishers
- Receiving fire safety training during induction and refresher training regularly
- Taking part in fire drills at least once every 12 months
- Having Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPs) in place where required

Getting involved is a simple way to invest in your staff and strengthen your business.
Fire escape routes must be kept clear and usable at all times.
Businesses should ensure that:
- Escape routes are free from obstructions, furniture, and excess stock
- Routes are well lit and clearly signed
- Final exits are unlocked, unobstructed, and lead to a place of safety
- Fire action and exit signage is clearly visible
Fire doors play a critical role in preventing the spread of fire and smoke.
Regular checks should confirm that:
- Fire doors close fully into the frame
- Self-closing devices are working correctly
- Intumescent strips and smoke seals are intact
- Fire doors are not wedged or propped open
Fire detection and warning systems must be maintained so everyone can hear the alarm.
Key requirements include:
- Weekly fire alarm testing using different call points
- Recording tests in a fire safety logbook
- Annual servicing by a qualified fire alarm engineer
- Ensuring emergency lighting is regularly tested and serviced
If your fire alarm is connected to a call centre, make sure keyholder contact details are up to date and false alarms are reported.
Fire extinguishers must be suitable for the risks within your premises.
Businesses should ensure that:
- The correct type of extinguisher is provided
- Visual checks are carried out weekly
- Annual servicing is completed by a qualified engineer
Faulty electrics are a common cause of fires.
To reduce risk:
- Fixed electrical installations should be tested at least every five years
- Portable electrical appliances should be checked regularly
- Emergency lighting systems should be tested and serviced annually
Protecting your premises against deliberate fire-setting is essential.
Good practice includes:
- Securing buildings when closed
- Removing waste regularly and storing it securely
- Keeping entrances and exits clear
- Avoiding excessive stock levels
- Using lighting, CCTV, and fencing where appropriate
