“VATS THE PROBLEM”: The movement to help save our favourite hospitality venues

 

Our local pubs, cosy cafes, independent restaurants, and lively nightclubs are far more than just businesses, they are the beating heart of our communities. They are the places where we celebrate milestones, catch up with old friends, and find comfort after a long week. But behind the scenes, these beloved venues have been weathering a massive storm of rising costs.
Now, a new campaign is giving communities across the country a tangible way to stand up, back their favourite venues, and protect local jobs.

 

Enter: ‘VATS THE PROBLEM’.

 

Spearheaded by celebrated chef and publican Tom Kerridge, this movement is rallying the public to call on the Government to slash the Value Added Tax (VAT) for the hospitality sector down to a fair 10%.
Currently, when you enjoy a meal out or a weekend stayaway in the UK, you are paying a hefty 20% extra in VAT.

 

The European comparison is 10%, it becomes clear that a fairer system is entirely possible. Most European nations actively support their vibrant hospitality cultures with much lower tax rates to help them thrive:
  • Germany: 7% VAT
  • France, Spain, and Italy: 10% VAT

 

Lowering the VAT rate to 10% means:
  • Securing a stronger future for the cafes and pubs that keep our high streets alive.
  • Protecting thousands of local jobs, especially for young people starting out in the workforce.
  • Keeping the places we love affordable, ensuring they remain welcoming social hubs for everyone.
