Be a Holiday Hero: Help Spread Joy Locally with the 'Under the Tree' Gift Drive
This Christmas, Worcester Business Improvement District (BID) and gift drive partner, Worcester Cathedral, invite businesses and residents to join the ‘Under the Tree’ Gift Drive—a heartwarming initiative designed to bring joy to local children and much-needed items to rough sleepers, collecting between the 23rd of November and 16th of December. With the support of Worcester’s vibrant business community and local charities ready to distribute donations, this campaign aims to spread smiles and share kindness throughout the festive season.
The ‘Under the Tree’ Gift Drive is a collaborative effort in partnership with Kinship and Maggs Day Centre, two remarkable, local charities dedicated to supporting vulnerable children and adults in Worcester. Every donation helps ensure that no one feels left out during the holiday season.
Sam McCarthy, CEO of Worcester BID, emphasised that the goal of this campaign is to bring smiles and essential items to people in our local area who are in need this December. “Every year thousands come to view the sparkling trees within the Cathedral cloisters bringing delight to visitors, however for many Christmas isn’t full of joy with eyes lighting up on Christmas morning. This year think about how we as a community can change what’s under the tree for many this year. Instead of Secret Santa with your colleagues, why not be a Secret Santa for a child in need who would be over the moon to receive a gift this Christmas or to support someone who has found themselves in a troubled position of rough sleeping, bring them warmth and essentials to help their day to day lives.”
Support Children in Need Through Kinship:
Donations for children will be distributed to kids facing challenging circumstances, such as those in care or emergency housing. These gifts can bring a sense of normality and joy to children experiencing a difficult time, creating a special day no matter where.
Provide Essential Items to Rough Sleepers Through Maggs:
Rough sleepers often face harsh conditions during the winter. Maggs Day Centre will distribute donated items to help provide warmth, comfort, and dignity to those without a home this Christmas.
How Can Your Business Can Help?
Instead of traditional gift exchanges or office Secret Santa activities, businesses are encouraged to organise a donation drive. By reimagining workplace festive gifting traditions, you can make a meaningful local impact and show support for the Worcester community.
Convenient Donation Points Across Worcester:
Drop off your contributions at one of the designated locations, making it easy for businesses, employees, and residents to participate.

Worcester’s Commandery Celebrates National ‘Welcome’ Award
The Commandery is celebrating after being named among the Best in Britain by Visit England, the national tourist board for England.
72 English attractions were given an award from Visit England to celebrate their excellence. Five categories were on offer: Welcome, Quality Food and Drink, Hidden Gem, Best Told Story, and the Gold award for overall experience.
The Commandery, in Sidbury, Worcester, won the ‘Welcome’ award and was praised for its welcoming environment. The accolade celebrates the high-quality experience offered to visitors to the historic site.
Built on the site of an early medieval chapel, The Commandery has been a monastic hospital, family home, Royalist Civil War headquarters, a college for the blind, and housed the Littlebury Printworks, before becoming today’s museum revealing significant stories of Worcester’s history. A magnificent medieval great hall, a death mask of Oliver Cromwell, walled gardens, and fifteenth-century wall paintings are just some of the highlights.
The building also regularly hosts events and activities for all.
Andrew Stoke, director of Visit England, said: "These accolades highlight the wonderful visitor experiences provided by English attractions, from the warmest of welcomes to amazing food and drink, and from great storytelling to outstanding customer service.
"Our tourism businesses are the bedrock of our industry and it is wonderful to highlight and celebrate the fantastic service and experiences they give visitors time after time."
Rachel Robinson, Museum Manager at The Commandery, said, “We are so pleased to receive the ‘Welcome’ Visitor Attraction Accolade for The Commandery. This award is a tribute to our fabulous team and a recognition of the excellent welcome they provide to all visitors.”

Worcester BID Enhances Daytime Economy with Extra Summer Initiatives
Worcester Business Improvement District (BID) has rolled out a series of strategic initiatives to boost the daytime economy and support local businesses during the busy summer holidays. Recognising the increased footfall and operational pressures faced by businesses during peak footfall periods, Worcester BID has extended key services and introduced new measures to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for both residents and visitors.
One of the standout initiatives is the enhanced hours of Safe Space operation. Safe Space is typically available between 10 PM and 4 AM on Friday and Saturday evenings, but during this summer break, our Safe Space is now operational every weekday, Monday to Friday, throughout the daytime! This change aims to provide immediate assistance and support to individuals during the peak hours of city centre activity and has already dealt with many medical and welfare support cases.
In addition to Safe Space Worcester's increased availability, Worcester BID has significantly bolstered its standard city safety measures by deploying two additional Safer Streets Officers. These officers will patrol the streets from 9 am to 9 pm, offering extended coverage to deter anti-social behaviour and ensure a secure environment for shoppers and business owners. This proactive approach aims to create a safer, more welcoming atmosphere in the city centre, enhancing the overall visitor experience.
Recognising the importance of engaging younger audiences during the holidays, Worcester BID has also organised a range of youth engagement activities. These activities, available three days a week, include interactive and creative sessions such as colouring, penguin painting in celebration of the Waddle of Worcester Art Trail, and felt making. These activities are designed to keep children entertained, allowing families to enjoy all that Worcester has to offer.
Moreover, The Base will host various activities every Thursday as part of a comprehensive summer programme for 11–17-year-olds. These events contribute to a vibrant and dynamic city atmosphere, providing additional support and engagement opportunities for local businesses and visitors.
By implementing these initiatives, Worcester BID demonstrates its commitment to fostering a thriving local economy and creating a safe, enjoyable environment for everyone. The enhanced security measures and diverse range of activities not only support businesses but also enrich the community experience during the bustling summer months.
For more information on these initiatives and to stay updated on all Worcester BID activities, visit the Worcester BID website and follow us on social media @worcesterbid on Twitter and Facebook, and @makeitworc on Instagram!
BID and Lightbox Partner to Launch "The Base"
This summer, the Worcester Business Improvement District (BID) has teamed up with Lightbox to introduce an exciting new initiative called “The Base.” This program is designed to provide a dedicated space for local teenagers aged 11-17, managed by local volunteers.
Starting Thursday, July 25th, The Base will be open weekly, every Thursday, during the summer holidays from 1 pm to 5 pm at The Granary, Worcester. The initiative aims to offer a safe and supportive environment where young people can relax, have fun, and connect with their peers.
The Base will feature a variety of activities to keep attendees entertained. Each week The Base will offer different activities, such as cage football, Xbox Series S gaming tournaments, nail art sessions, and graffiti workshops, ensuring there’s something for everyone. Additionally, table tennis, a pool table, a chill-out zone, and free Wi-Fi will be available each week.
Stephanie Boyd, a volunteer at Lightbox, emphasised the initiative’s goal: “As churches across Worcester, we want to create space and opportunity for young people to connect and know there is a place for them and people here for them. We do this through LIGHTBOX pop-ups in schools, colleges, after-school drop-ins, and collaborative youth events.”
Sam McCarthy, CEO of Worcester BID, shared her enthusiasm for the project: “We are thrilled to partner with Lightbox to create a hub for young people at the heart of our city over the summer. This initiative will provide great opportunities for positive youth engagement and give teens a dedicated, free space during peak footfall times.”
In addition to The Base, BID is also providing activities for younger children at Crowngate Pod, offering arts and crafts sessions from Monday through Wednesday.
If The Base proves successful, the partnership aims to offer more holiday events like this in the future.
No booking is required to attend any sessions at The Base—just pop in with a friend or come and make new ones!
For more information about The Base and other activities, please visit Worcester BID’s social media channels, @worcesterbid, or follow The Base on TikTok @TheBaseWorcs.
