Behind Worcester’s High Street: The Independent Business Owners Keeping the City’s Heart Beating

Worcester's independent business owners are the driving force behind the local economy, creating jobs, supporting communities and working tirelessly behind the scenes to keep their businesses thriving.

Recent national comments about employers and workers have left some business owners feeling deflated and hurt. In a city where over 68% of businesses are independently owned, the distinction between owner and worker simply does not exist.

They are both.

With the peak festive season underway, local founders are working harder than ever, balancing rising operational costs while personally pulling 12-plus-hour shifts to keep their doors open.

Running an independent business is rarely just about selling a product or providing a service. It means wearing countless different hats, often all within the same day. Mornings might begin with checking deliveries, reviewing stock, preparing orders and making sure the shop floor is looking its best.

But the responsibility doesn't end when the last customer leaves and the shutters come down.

There are emails to answer, invoices to process, finances to review, staff rotas to organise, suppliers to contact, marketing campaigns to plan and social media posts to prepare. From HR and finance to customer service, maintenance, administration and marketing, independent business owners are responsible for every moving part of their business.

And alongside all of this, they carry the responsibility of employing people, paying wages, managing rising costs, investing in their premises and making difficult decisions to keep their businesses viable.

Samantha McCarthy, Chief Executive of Worcester BID said, "Sometimes I think we forget the people behind the businesses. Independent business owners are not simply employers. They are workers themselves, often working incredibly long hours and taking on responsibilities that would be spread across entire departments in larger organisations.

"They take the risks, make the investment, create the opportunities and provide employment for others. Without their commitment, determination and willingness to put so much of themselves into their businesses, many of those employment opportunities simply wouldn't exist."

For Worcester, this contribution is particularly significant. With more than 68% of the city's businesses independently owned, these entrepreneurs are not just filling our high streets; they are helping shape the identity, character and economic resilience of our city.

They create local jobs, support other local businesses, invest in their communities and give Worcester the individuality that makes it different. Their success contributes directly to the wider local economy, supporting supply chains, attracting visitors and creating places where people want to shop, eat, drink and spend time.

We spoke to independent business owner, Sarah Johnson who runs Simply Beautiful in Worcester City Centre, who added:

“We love what we do, but running a business takes an enormous amount of hard work. We are proud to employ local people, but we are on the front lines working hard every single day. With taxes going up, it’s getting tougher and tougher, and as working people ourselves, it would just be nice for this to be recognised.”

It is this commitment, hard work and personal sacrifice that helps keep Worcester's independent business community alive.

As the Christmas shopping season approaches, there has never been a better time to recognise the people behind our high streets.

Shopping locally is about so much more than what's under the tree. It is about supporting the people who take risks, create jobs, invest in our city and work tirelessly to keep our local economy moving. When you support an independent business, you are supporting a business owner, their employees, their families and the wider Worcester community.

This Christmas, let's celebrate the people behind the businesses and recognise the hard work that keeps Worcester's heart beating.
